CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Governor Nathan Deal is advising Clayton County educators to work together to ward off any prospect of losing accreditation again.

Just weeks into the new school year, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools sent the school district a warning letter.

SACS expressed concern about infighting among board members and the selection of a new superintendent.

"I would certainly encourage them to do that. We don't want to go through what we've had to go through before with the loss of accreditation. That is a serious matter. It affects the children and the future of those children in terms of further educational opportunities, so we're hopeful that they will do whatever they can to avoid losing their accreditation," Deal said.

SACS has given the district until January 15 to resolve any issues.

The system just regained its accreditation last year after losing it in 2008.

The next public school board meeting is scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m.
