A former star Buford High football player suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle accident on Wednesday. Devin Durden, 21, was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle on Georgia Highway 20 at Gravel Springs Road.
Family and friends said that the Durden suffered a broken leg and injured his spinal cord in the accident.
"We understand that the spinal cord is not severed, so there is hope there's not paralysis," said Buddy Curry.
Durden's father, Gene, is a well-known coach at Buford High, where Devin was a standout player before going into the Air Force. He had been home from the Air Force Academy less than 24 hours when the accident occurred.
The tragedy is the second to befall the Buford community in the last month.
Two weeks ago, Adam Smith, a student at the school, passed away after collapsing following a basketball practice.
"It's been tough on the whole community and the Buford community been through a lot in the last nine month," said football coach David Watkins. "The biggest thing that I hope is that first of all, he is going to pull through surgery all right. And I know there were some questions about paralysis and just pray the surgeons will do whatever technology allows them to do to prevent that."
In January, 30-year-old coach Ryan Daniel died after collapsing during a pick-up basketball game.
