Alligator living in Gwinnett Co. neighborhood lake

Posted: Updated:

Residents are split over what to do about an alligator living in a Gwinnett County neighborhood lake. Some feed the gator; others have lost sleep over it.

The three-foot gator has made its home at Dunlin Lake in Lawrenceville.

Iqbal Ahmed said that he has fed the gator every morning for the past six months. In that time, Ahmed said that the gator has grown about 25 percent.

The Department of Natural Resources said that an alligator of that size does not pose a threat to children and pets. However, some residents said that they are worried about what happens when the gator gets bigger.

"With my kids, I don't feel that safe. I've looked up and read what the news said about it not being a threat to us, but I don't like it across the street from our house," said Shavonna Wilson.

Wilson said that the gator has lived in the lake for at least two years.  She said that she was concerned after hearing that neighbors were feeding the gator.

DNR officials said that they normally don't come out for gators of that size. They said that they have talked to the homeowner's association about what to do about the gator, including calling a private trapper.
