ATLANTA -

Police say a man accused in three deaths attempted to rape a fourth victim days before the murders.

Joseph Smith is accused of killing his fiancée, her 12-year-old daughter, and his girlfriend.

Police say Smith shot and killed his fiancee, Shatikey "Tiki" Griffin, and her daughter, Demiya Griffin. Smith, 32, was taken into custody after a standoff at their family home in Atlanta on Sunday.

The bodies of Shatikey Griffin and her daughter were found inside the home after the standoff ended.  They had been both been shot in the head, police said.

While Smith was holding police at bay in southwest Atlanta, officers in East Point found the body of Loveitt Wallace, 36, inside a hotel room at the Wellesley Inn. Police say Smith strangled Wallace. Smith's sister alerted police to the body, authorities said.

Family members of Wallace said that Smith and Loveitt had an "on and off" relationship for seven years.

Members of Shatikey Griffin's family say she and Smith were to be married in October.

FOX 5 has learned that police in Atlanta believe that Smith attacked an attempted to rape a fourth victim in her apartment three days before the triple murders.

A police report indicates Smith forced himself on the woman and when she screamed he bit, choked and hit her in the face before fleeing the scene.

Smith has been arrested several times, dating back to 1999. In 2009, he was arrested for abandonment of a minor child. In 2003, he was arrested for battery, and for sexual and simple battery in 1999. Police confirmed Smith has a 14-year-old daughter.

Smith waived his court appearance on Tuesday. His  next court appearance is expected to be in two weeks.
