Minor earthquake hits northwest Ga. near Ala. line

TRION, Ga. (AP) - A minor earthquake hit northwest Georgia near the Alabama state line, but there were no reports of anyone having felt it.

U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Paul Caruso says the 2.0 magnitude earthquake hit at 10:02 p.m. Wednesday. Its epicenter was about five miles northwest of Trion. That's about 30 miles north of Rome.

Caruso said Thursday no one had called to report having felt the earthquake. He says an earthquake generally has to register a 2.5 magnitude before people feel it.

Police in Fort Payne, Ala., across the state line say nobody called them to report any tremors either.

Earthquakes are not unheard of in Georgia, but serious ones are very rare.
