Fulton County's elections director is behind bars after his probation for a 2009 driving under the influence charge was revoked.
Samuel Westmoreland, 43, was arrested last Friday for failing to perform court-ordered probation on the traffic incident. His 2009 arrest reported noted the presence of prescription drugs, including Xanax, in his system.
Westmoreland is now serving 10 days in jail.
Fulton County had several problems in the July primary election. The county election office removed or purged 2,000 voters. That issue was able to be resolved in time.
The office also put about 700 voters in the wrong district. On primary day, phone calls to the office went unanswered, frustrating some officials and citizens.
Fulton County Commissioner Robb Pitts said that some immediate changes are necessary. He said that Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp has offered to assist in the next election.
The elections board is scheduled to hold a meeting on September 24 – the same day Westmoreland is slated to be released from jail.
