Police: Man tried to kidnap boy at park

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

Police have arrested a man who allegedly tried to kidnap a young boy from a Gwinnett County park.

An 8-year-old boy was hanging around Bay Creek Park in Loganville on Monday when a stranger grabbed him.

"The guy came up to him and then he just grabbed him real hard on the wrist," said the boy's 12-year-old brother.

He said his little brother was terrified as the man dragged him toward the bleachers and didn't let go until another parent stepped in.

"It was real crazy and scary," said the 12-year-old boy.

Witnesses called police, who arrived and arrested Jean Souffrant. Authorities said that Souffrant, 40, had tried to lure other children from the park.

Parents said that an email informed them that Souffrant approached at least four kids before being arrested.

None of the children were harmed.

Parents say they've always felt safe at the park, but now they're keeping their kids close.

"I come here a lot with my other two grandchildren, but I didn't bring them tonight because I didn't want to have to worry," said one woman.

Souffrant is being held in the Gwinnett County Jail without bond, and is charged with attempted kidnapping. He was scheduled to have his first appearance on Wednesday, but was deemed unfit to appear in the courtroom.
