Atlanta mayor says he'll veto panhandling ordinance

ATLANTA -

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed says he won't support the crackdownon panhandlers approved by the city council.

On Monday, Atlanta City Council approved an amendment to the existing law thatwould send aggressive panhandlers to jail for up to six months.

Despite complaints by visitors and hotels about panhandling,the mayor said that he plans to veto that ordinance.

 Reed says he willoffer his own plan that will be more humane and less punitive. His staff toldFOX 5's Julia Reynolds that he wants to take a muscular approach but with asoft touch.

Reed wants to address chronic homelessness, according to hisspokesperson. The city was given more than $3 million in grants last year toaddress the issue.
