DUNWOODY, Ga. -
Former President Jimmy Carter's grandson is speaking out his role in leaking the now-infamous video of Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney that has sparked a political firestorm.
In the video, which was shot during a closed fundraiser back in May, Romney is heard saying that some Americans believe they are victims entitled to help from the government.
James Carter IV, a staunch Democrat, played a part in spreading the video.
"I knew that it was newsworthy, that it was going to be a story but...nothing in my wildest imaginings that it was anywhere close to this scale," said Carter.
The Dunwoody man has been making the rounds of the media circuit since news broke of his role in the leaking of the video to Mother Jones magazine journalist David Corn.
"The clips that have come out play into the already existing narrative of Mitt Romney as the detached, rich guy who doesn't know anything about the struggles of the poor and lower middle class," said Carter.
Carter said he found a portion of the video online.
"I came across a tape that was a little snippet of a Mitt Romney fundraiser and I tracked the tape back to its source," he said.
Carter convinced the person who posted the original footage of secretly recorded remarks by the GOP presidential candidate, to give the video to Corn.
Carter, a self-proclaimed opposition researcher, says he routinely scours the internet for such clips using generic keywords like "Romney" and "Republicans." He says he never expected the video would go viral
"Part of the reason why I think this blew up so much is because it plays so well into that story that has already being shaped," said Carter.
Carter has not revealed who shot the Romney video during a fundraiser last May, saying only he tracked the individual down via Twitter and put the person in contact with the magazine reporter.
