ATLANTA (AP) - Civil rights icon the Rev. Joseph Lowery urged young people to vote at an event at Clark Atlanta University.
Lowery delivered the keynote address Tuesday at the school's annual fall convocation. Lowery had planned to lead a voter registration march after speaking. But the march was cancelled because of the weather, and students instead filed out of the gymnasium to voter registration tables set up downstairs.
Lowery, who was 1 of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s lieutenants in the civil rights movement, will turn 91 next month. He co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with King and others in 1957.
Lowery's legacy of service and fight for freedom and equality continue through the Joseph E. Lowery Institute for Justice and Human Rights at the school.
