A 16-year-old Buford High School student died three days after collapsing on a track field.
Adam Smith suddenly collapsed during preseason basketball conditioning last Thursday.
"He was on his second lap and as he ran on the other side of the stadium…he walked up to [a nearby teacher] said, ‘I'm not feeling well,' and collapsed." said Dr. Banks Bitterman, principal at Buford High.
School officials say that while emergency crews revived Adam, he never recovered. The junior died late Sunday.
"There's a lot of questions why. We don't know the answers," said Bitterman.
Students and school officials remembered Smith as an outstanding athlete and a student leader with a smile that was both common and contagious.
"When you talk about a kid who has it -- Adam was that kind of kid," said Bitterman.
Pastor Matt Stacy says Adam was a bright spot for so many in the first Baptist Church of Buford congregation.
"Everybody considered Adam to be their best friend, and I think it's a testimony to who he was and how much he cared for others," said Bitterman.
The tragedy is the second to befall the school. In January, 30-year-old coach Ryan Daniel died of a heart attack.
