MARIETTA, Ga. -

Authorities in Marietta are trying to find the man who broke into a home on Hazel Street, and assaulted and robbed an elderly woman.

Investigators with the Marietta Police Department say a man forced his way into the home early Sunday morning. They say the man overpowered the victim, and threatened her if she did not cooperate. He made off with cash and jewelry.

"It's shocking, a home invasion," said a neighbor.

Neighbors are still reeling following the violent home invasion and assault of a grandmother in her 80s, and detectives are rolling up their sleeves to solve the case in the established Rainbow Estates neighborhood in Marietta.

Lynn Hanley has lived across the street from the elderly grandmother who was assaulted.

"Dogs started barking at 5 a.m. for about 10 minutes, then at six all the police cars came and we knew something had happen," said Hanley.

Police say the intruder forced his way into the house by going through a back window where FOX 5 saw police process for fingerprints on Sunday.

"It's unclear as to whether he was armed. The description of the suspect is being investigated now for further follow up," said officer David Baldwin of the Marietta Police Department.

FOX 5 has learned that the victim works at a jewelry store, but police have not said whether that job made her a target.

"Detectives have been working diligently to discover everything that was taken during this home invasion.   We do know that some of the jewelry was costume jewelry as well as some of it was real jewelry.  We are trying to determine the price amount," said Officer David Baldwin of the Marietta Police Department.

Neighbors say that despite her age, the victim gets around pretty well and always lends a helping hand to others.

"She is a southern belle, always polite," said Hanley.

The case remains under investigation. They are asking that anyone with information to call the Marietta Police Department at 770-794-5300.
