Two people were killed in a small plane in north Forsyth County on Thursday night, fire officials have confirmed.
The plane went down just before 8 p.m. at Shady Grove Road at Lanier Drive near Cumming, Ga. The plane was described as a RV7, a small kit plane.
"It sounded like a lawn mower that was running out of gas. You could the engine and then a sputtering sound and then the engine sounded like it was trying to turn over again and a sputtering sound. And then there was a thud, and it was a quiet thud," said Sarah Vogel, who lives near the crash site.
Logan Haynes said that the front end of the plane was "mangled."
Captain Tim House of the Forsyth County Fire Department said it appeared that the damage was confined to one spot and it appeared that the plane landed nose-first.
It narrowly missed the Deer Creek Shores Presbyterian Church, which had about a dozen people inside at the time. No one in that church was injured.
Both of the plane's passengers were killed, according the Forsyth County Fire Department. Their names have not been released.
