ATLANTA -

Breeder's Choice Pet Foods is recalling one of its brands due to potential salmonella contamination, the company announced in a press release.

The recall only affects the company's AvoDerm Natural Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Adult Dog Formula with the "Best Before" dates of 28 Aug 2013, 29 Aug 2013, 30 Aug 2013.

The recalled product was distributed to retailers and distribution centers in California, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, Virginia and Washington.

People who have the potentially contaminated product should discard it immediately and stop handling it as it poses a risk to humans and other animals as well.

BluePearl Veterinary Partners said in a press release, "In addition to direct transmission to dogs, salmonella is zoonotic disease, which means it can be passed from animals to humans. Common symptoms of salmonella in dogs include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, lethargy, fever and abdominal discomfort."
