Police in Henry County are searching for the men who they say broke into a house and fired at the homeowners.
Officers say Ronnie Cantrell, Sr., 68, and his son, Ronnie Cantrell, Jr., 42, arrived home shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday to find two unidentified black males wearing masks inside their Lexington Park subdivision home in Stockbridge.
The intruders were armed, one with a shotgun, and fired shots at the homeowners. Police say the homeowners were hit by gunfire, but one of them was able to fire back at the intruders. The suspects fled on foot. They say one of the suspects was identified after arriving at Piedmont Henry Hospital with gunshot wounds sustained during the shooting. That suspect, 20-year-old Brandon Terry-Hall, was booked in Henry County Jail.
The residents of the home were taken to Grady Hospital. The elder Cantrell is listed in critical condition, according to Henry County police. His son is also on a ventilator after he suffered a severe hand injury and will lose some fingers.
Cantrell's daughter Rhonda Newton was out of town when she got the grim news. She spent the morning at the hospital.
"We were able to see my dad. He was able to respond by squeezing our hands. He had heart problems in the past, so they are really watching that," said Newton.
Newton says her father is a pillar of the community. The Cantrell family has lived in Henry County for decades. The senior Cantrell owns a substantial amount of land and neighbors call him a smart businessman.
While police haven't revealed a possible motive, investigators don't think it's a random crime. Newton can't imagine why anyone would target her dad.
"I don't know if they targeted them specifically, if they thought maybe there was money -- I just don't know, but they did target that house obviously," said Newton.
Police say a 2013 black Kia Rio, driven by the suspects, was recovered in the Lexington Park subdivision and may have been seen in the neighborhood.
Authorities have issued arrest warrants for 18-year-old Robert Price and 21-year-old Trey Cota. They are also seeking a fourth suspect known only at "Terrence."
Anyone with information on the case is urged to call Henry County police at 770-288-7242.
