Bill toughening panhandling penalties moves forward

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Atlanta City Council members took a major step Tuesday to deal with beggars who harass citizens.

The public safety panel wants to see a six month jail sentence imposed on aggressive panhandlers.

Police can arrest the beggars on the first offense.

Citizens have been complaining for months about panhandlers who shout at them, touch them and follow them down the street.

Councilman Michael Bond authored the legislation.

The full council will take up the bill on Monday.
