ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta's mayor says necessary improvements around the site of a new NFL stadium could boost the project's total cost to $1.2 billion.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/UFqlQl) that Mayor Kasim Reed said Monday that upgrades to sidewalks, roads and other amenities could lead to a higher project total. He did not say the cost of the stadium itself would go over an architect's estimate of $948 million, which would be raised by the state and the Falcons.
Reed backs the project and indicated that he would be willing to put some city money into the improvements. That could come from an already planned bond issue. The city also has $53 million in cash for economic development projects in the Westside tax allocation district, which includes the stadium area.
