Milton High basketball coach resigns

MILTON, Ga. -

School officials in Fulton County say the tenure of one of metro Atlanta's most successful hoops coaches is over. David Boyd resigned as boys' basketball coach at Milton High School on Monday.

Boyd resigned after an investigation by Fulton County athletic officials into recruiting allegations of what school officials call "undue influence."

"It can be anywhere from inviting somebody to attend a game or practice, or giving influence to try to help convince somebody to try and come to your school," said Fulton County Schools athletic director Steven Craft.

Boyd won more than 500 games and won five state titles at four different high schools, including Milton.

"It's hard on our student athletes, it's hard on our community, but we're going to move forward and Milton will have the ideals of integrity and excellence at the basis of this program as we move forward," said Milton High principal Clifford Jones.

The Georgia High School Association told FOX 5 that they are still waiting to get information on the allegations from Fulton County Schools.

Many in the community said they're not surprised by the allegations with the boys' basketball team winning titles in recent years after not being dominant in the past.

"For them to one year go from not being very talented, to all of a sudden having four and five star recruits coming off their bench was a little bit shocking," said Roswell resident Sam Gasquez.

"You know, the one thing I've noticed down here is that their sports is big to them and winning is everything to them and I don't see an issue with it.  I'm sure he's not the first to do it, I'm sure he's just the only one that's been implicated in it," said parent Keith Frisby.

Boyd has not returned FOX 5's requests for comment.
