Schools all over the metro area are remembering the 9/11 attacks. One of those is Milton High School. Students placed 2,997 flags on the school's front yard. Each has a name attached to it, representing a life lost 11 years ago.
Milton High School Senior Zach Bailey gathered friends to help him place flags on the high school lawn. He said each person whose name is on a flag deserves to be remembered in a special way.
"Whether it be being in the wrong place at the wrong time in the plane, or those who knew that they were putting their lives at risk when they went into the smoking building and went to go save lives," said Bailey.
The students who put these flags out were only 6 or 7 years old at the time. They say they only remember bits and pieces of the day, but as the years passed, they realized the terror and heartbreak.
"We were so little that it was -- just didn't affect us, and now coming out and helping with this, we actually realize that all these people did die," said Abbey Clear.
Milton Police Officer Scott Mulvey recently visited Ground Zero.
"It sets it home for you, to go up there and actually see the area that all that occurred, and how tight New York is, and how many people are still around and didn't run from it," said Mulvey.
The students say it is now up to them to remember and pay tribute to those who lost their lives.
"It's definitely our duty as this generation to remember for those who were even younger who don't have those memories and just to keep the memory alive," said Bailey.
Before school started on Tuesday, a ceremony was held honoring the vicitims of 9/11. The flags will stay up until Wednesday night.
Another Milton school, Cambridge High, also remembered 9/11 by placing flags on the front lawn of their school.
