The mother of a Clayton County 4-year-old who was shot in the head less than two weeks ago talked to FOX 5 about the incident. Zera Harmon says she is grateful to God that her daughter, London, survived the shooting.
Zera, a mother of four, shaved her head on one side to make her daughter -- who recently had brain surgery -- feel more comfortable about her hairdo.
The 4-year-old came to Like a River hair salon with her parents to watch her mom make the transformation.
Zera told FOX 5's Aungelique Proctor about those unbelievable moments when she heard an unusual sound while driving.
"When I heard it, I didn't know what it was. So, I remember looking at my son, I'm thinking blow out. Anything but that," said Zera Harmon. "My daughter started screaming and my son started screaming and I was actually driving, so I pulled over…When I pulled open the van and saw my child. It was like my heart just broke. I picked her up and she was crying and I was telling her, you know, ‘I'm so sorry.' You have to understand, the side of my baby's head was gone."
Twelve days later, the story is quite different. Zera said that she thanks God every time she looks at her feisty daughter, who is expected to make a full recovery.
"I got on my hands and knees and I said, please forgive me for ever doubting your power," said Zera Harmon."I thought I had lost my child. It's such an eye opener to let me realize how wonderful God is."
The Harmons say they didn't realize the gun was in the van because their family doesn't own a gun. Harmon had allowed a business associate to borrow the van. That person apparently left the gun in the van and the children found it.
London has no memory of the shooting. The Harmons say she will have to have a least one more surgery to insert a titanium plate in the back of her head to protect the soft tissue of her brain.
Clayton County police say they are still investigating the case.
