Atlanta police, fire remember lives lost on 9/11

ATLANTA -

One day before the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States, Atlanta's first responders paused to remember their fallen comrades.  Ceremonies are planned across the country on Tuesday and throughout the week.

For one officer who witnessed Monday's ceremony, the events hit especially close to home.

Eleven years ago, Atlanta Police Officer Nicola Sime had the same job he has now, only he worked for NYPD.  He says ceremonies honoring the service of public safety officers killed on that day in 2001 are reminders of colleagues he lost when the World Trade Center towers fell.  He told FOX 5 we should remember the lives lost every day and not just when there's a tragedy.

For many others who watched the wreaths laid outside Atlanta Public Safety Headquarters on Monday, it's a reminder of something that all men and women face: the risks and the rewards of the job.

"We can never forget the tremendous loss of lives of all the Americans that were sacrificed on that day, killed as the result of horrific acts of those terrorists," said Atlanta Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran.  "But we can never also forget the sacrifice of the first responders."
