MARIETTA, Ga. -

A police chase and deadly officer-involved shooting closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 in Marietta for several hours Sunday.

Investigators tell FOX 5 News that the incident started with the armed robbery of the Marathon gas station on Bells Ferry and Victoria roads in Woodstock just after 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Police say the description of the suspect was broadcast to all law enforcement in Cherokee County.

A spokesperson for the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office says that about 45 minutes after the robbery, Woodstock police officers caught up with a vehicle they believed to be that of the suspects. That vehicle was traveling southbound on Interstate 575 near Bells Ferry Road heading towards Cobb County when officers attempted to pull it over. When the driver refused, police gave chase.

Officers with the Cobb County Police Department and deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office joined Woodstock police as the pursuit continued south onto Interstate 75. One of those units eventually was able to perform a successful PIT maneuver just north of South Marietta Parkway.

Police say the man got out of the stopped vehicle and pointed a gun at them. That's when they say the officers opened fire on the man, killing him.

All lanes of traffic were closed at the end of the nearly seven mile chase for several hours while detectives with the Georgia Bureau of Investigations worked with the officers involved to reconstruct the scene.

Traffic was being routed off Interstate 75 at North Marietta Parkway and funneled by the crime scene area on the inner emergency lane. All lanes reopened around 5 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators have not yet released the name of the suspect that was killed or further details on the armed robbery.
