Who would steal an American Flag? It is the very question that Cherokee County investigators are asking after several thefts.
The stolen flags are put up by the Optimist Club each holiday weekend to benefit local children's charities. The handmade flags went up around the Towne Lake community this Labor Day Weekend, but members found they had nine less when they went to take them down again.
The new holiday tradition has increased in popularity in the short time the club has done it. Over 200 homes and businesses pay $25 a year for one flag to be flown. The club raises close to $15,000 a year which goes to the different county charities.
Investigators say each flag is worth about $40 each. They say anyone with information on the theft should call 770-928-0239.
