ATLANTA -

Police are investigating after an employee said that she found a handgun in a trash can at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding downtown on Sunday.

A cleaning woman said that she was changing a trash can liner when she discovered a .40-caliber Glock in a bag. Police said they don't know how the gun got there.

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta released a statement saying, "Extra security measures were taken immediately, including an increased security presence at the facility and a dedicated security officer in the emergency department. No threats were made and no altercations occurred at the facility."

The weapon was turned over to police and transported to the Atlanta Property Control Division.
