Local pastor reacts to Democratic platform controversy

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Democrats are taking some heat after it took three tries on Wednesday to amend their convention platform to add a mention of God and declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel.

White House aides said the president himself ordered the party to put the language back in, but Republican rival, Mitt Romney, says the omission is proof that Democrats are " increasingly out of touch with the mainstream."

The Rev.  Timothy McDonald of First Iconium Baptist Church in Atlanta questioned why the language had been pulled from the platform.

"I was shocked and surprised. I had assumed that it was already in the platform. It was in the platform in '08," said McDonald.

McDonald, who served as a delegate in two previous Democratic Conventions, said that voters shouldn't get hung up on the issue.

"We've heard from the chairman of AIPAC, the Jewish lobby, that it has been fixed now, so let's move on because there are more issues out there that definitely need to be addressed," said McDonald.

McDonald says how a party incorporates God into its policies and practices is far more important than whether either political party has "God" written into their platform positions. He doubts this will have any kind of impact on the race for the White House.
