GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

The body of a missing University of Georgia student was found in a wrecked truck off of Highway 316 on Monday, officials have confirmed.

A tractor-trailer driver spotted the black pickup on its side in a wooded area late Monday afternoon.  Inside the truck was the body of 22-year-old Quinton Ayers, according to Cpl. Jake Smith of the Gwinnett County Police Department.  The vehicle appeared to have hit a tree while traveling at a high speed, Smith said.

Ayers, 22, had last been seen early Saturday in the Athens area. He had told friends that he was going to visit friends in Adairsville. A cell phone tower at Gwinnett County Airport on Highway 316 picked up a ping from Ayers' phone around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

A helicopter search of the tree line along that stretch of 316 earlier on Monday had turned up nothing. Smith said that the vehicle was difficult to see from the air and the road.

The cause of the crash was not known. Toxicology reports are pending, according to police.
