Gwinnett takes part in teacher evaluations project

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Georgia's largest school district will participate in a trial run of a new system evaluating teachers and principals on students' progress.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Gwinnett County will take part in the evaluation system called the Race to the Top project.

Fifty-six of Gwinnett's schools and 5,109 teachers are participating in an expanded pilot that is set to be in place in 26 local school districts next year and throughout the state by 2014-2015.

Georgia received a $400 million federal grant in 2010. Gwinnett and 25 other districts signed on as the state's partners and participated in a four-month mini pilot of the evaluation system during the past school year.

State officials are still awaiting a final report on that pilot, but moving ahead with this year's expanded pilot.
