It's a labor of love at Atlanta's Northside Hospital

ATLANTA -

If you've had a child born in this area, chances are it happened at Northside Hospital. More babies are born there each year than at any other hospital in the country.

That means a lot of diapers, and a lot of dedicated nurses. Nurses, like Rhonda Sullivan, check each and every piece of the newborns.

"We check their heart, we check their temperature, we check their breathing, we check their color," said registered nurse Rhonda Sullivan.

Last year, more than 14,000 babies arrived at Northside Hospital. That's more than at any other single hospital in the entire United States.

"We have pockets!  We have pockets there, there, there in the back room and then the mother lode is in the back," said Sullivan.

Sullivan takes care of babies in the 6W B Nursery section.

"When I was 10, my father had a massive heart attack, and at the age of 10 I started learning about medical settings," said Sullivan.

That interest led her to Northside back in 1994. Nearly two decades ago, she was as green as her scrubs.

"When I initially started here I was very concerned. I would never even pick the baby up, I would just do my assessments without every picking the baby up. But after a while you learn how to hold the baby, that even if you move quickly, you still have a grasp on them," said Sullivan.

Now, she picks up babies all day long

"We have 16 rooms on one side, and 16 on the other, so babies can be in and out throughout the day," Sullivan said.

Even though the days are busy, and sometimes ear shattering, working at Baby Grand Central is a post she wouldn't dream of departing.

"Just seeing the sweetness of new life every day I come, I get to see that sweet, new life," said Sullivan.

The Women's Center at Northside's Atlanta campus opened in 1999 and was added to in 2007. If you add in Northside's Cherokee and Forsyth locations, the hospital handled nearly 18,000 births last year.
