New rock radio station coming to Atlanta?

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

More changes are on the way for rock radio listeners in Atlanta.

Less than 48 hours after Clear Channel flipped modern rocker Project 9-6-1 to pop Power 96.1, Cumulus Radio announced it was switching 98.9 from alternative to active rock, according to AllAccess.com.

According to its Facebook page, 98.9 will change from 99X to the Bone 98.9, switching from alternative favorites such as Coldplay, the Black Keys and Silversun Pickups to the harder-edge rock formerly favored by Project.

"Abandoned by Project 961? 98.9 The Bone... TOMORROW at Noon! 'Nuff said..." read a post on the Bone 98.9's new Facebook page.

The switch apparently ends (for now, at least) the 99X moniker, which has been around on various radio frequencies since at least the early 90s. The station's website had an "Under Reconstruction" banner on its page late Friday.

The move should satiate hard rock fans who sounded off online after Project's sign off on Wednesday night. An online petition had garnered more than 4,000 signatures, while numerous Facebook pages had also picked up thousands of "likes" in support of Project.

There was no immediate word if any of the former staff from Project 96.1 would be a part of the Bone 98.9.

CBS Radio has previously announced that it would be flipping its own rock station, Dave 92.9-FM, into a sports talk station in September or October.
