Atlanta braces for busy Labor Day weekend

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

If you plan on coming to the many events taking place in Atlanta this weekend, you might want to plan on a little extra travel time. Police have issued a traffic alert as the city braces for hundreds of thousands of people.

Getting around might not be easy this weekend, especially in downtown Atlanta, which is playing host to multiple big events. Atlanta police have even issued a traffic alert warning drivers about possible tie-ups.

The Georgia Dome will have not one, but two major college football games. The first pits Tennessee against North Carolina State on Friday night, and Saturday sees a battle of tigers when Auburn goes up against Clemson.

Not far away the Braves will take on the Phillies at Turner Field.

The events are not limited to sporting events. DragonCon, which bills itself as the world's largest multi-media science fiction, fantasy and gaming convention is expected to bring around 55,000 fans to downtown.  Be prepared to see zombies, vampires and Star Wars characters roaming the streets.

Piedmont Park will play host to the southeast's largest black gay pride festival.

Centennial Olympic Park will have free concerts on Friday and Saturday.

In Hampton, NASCAR is back, with races both Saturday and Sunday night.

On top of all the events, many people will be heading out of town for the Labor Day weekend. According to AAA, 900,000 Georgians will go at least 50 miles away from home during the long weekend, with most taking cars.
