Block puts up 'rat crossing' signs

Welcome to West 76th and Central Park West: home to multimillion-dollar brownstones, billionaires, and rats.

Neighbors say the rats mostly like to come out at night.  They say the rodents are up to a foot long and crawl along people's feet.

To help reduce that element of surprise, block president Joseph Bolanos put up rat crossing signs Wednesday night.  He said the critters started creeping along West 76th Street about two years ago when construction began at a brownstone.

Neighbors say they've contacted the Department of Health, the building's contractor, and owner about the problem.

Exterminators then put in baiting stations at the site, but the rats remain.

Neighbors say buildings should use thick garbage cans versus just plastic bags to help ease the infestation.

In the meantime, the rats don't look like they're moving out anytime soon, so residents say they'll be walking across the street until they do.

As for the signs, the block president said if they get taken down, he will put up even bigger ones.
