CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Clayton County police are investigating a shooting that left a 4-year-old girl in critical condition on Wednesday.

A mother said that she was traveling with her four children on Highway 54 when she heard a pop. She looked back and saw her 4-year-old daughter slumped over and realized that she had been shot.

The girl was  flown to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston where she underwent emergency surgery. She was listed in critical condition late Wednesday afternoon.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the gun was apparently fired inside the van.  Authorities are continuing to investigate why the children weren't at school and who fired the shot. The weapon was confiscated by authorities, according to Lt. Chris Windley of the Clayton County Police Department.

Police have not released any names of those involved in the incident.  They did not have the opportunity to interview the mother because she was with her injured daughter. Authorities said they do plan on talking to the mother on Thursday.

Authorities say the investigation continues, and charges could be possible.
