The U.S. government awarded one of the first African-American Marines from Georgia with the nation's highest civilian honor on Tuesday.

Nixon was a member of the historic Montford Point Marines in Norfolk. He and his comrades trained at the segregated boot camp after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order to help end discrimination in the Armed Forces.

Washington honored all members of the Montford Point Marines back in June of this year. Those who were unable to attend are being recognized at local ceremonies.
