Ga. leader accused in sex scandal tries comeback

ATLANTA (AP) - A former speaker of Georgia's House of Representatives who resigned in disgrace over a sex scandal is trying for a political comeback.

Glenn Richardson said Monday that he will run for a legislative seat being vacated by Sen. Bill Hamrick of Carrollton, who has been appointed to a judgeship.

Richardson was the first Republican speaker of Georgia's House of Representatives since Reconstruction. He announced he would resign in 2009 after attempting suicide and being accused by his ex-wife of having an affair with a lobbyist. That scandal propelled current House Speaker David Ralston into the chamber's top leadership post and led to changes in ethics laws.

A special primary election will be held in the district during the Nov. 6 statewide vote.
