Police are investigating after a woman and her teenage daughter were both sexually assaulted at an apartment complex in Clarkston. Authorities have arrested a man accused of burglarizing the apartment, and charged him with rape, robbery, burglary and aggravated sodomy on Tuesday.
An armed man forcibly entered a unit at the Southern Place Apartments on Montreal Road early Sunday morning. He is accused of sexually assaulting a woman and then assaulting the woman's 15-year-old daughter, according to Detective Vernon Sands of the Clarkston Police Department. The assailant also robbed the residents, Sands said.
Clarkston police said that the 15-year-old victim was so terrified she jumped out of a second-floor window to get away.
Police found her mother and little sister hiding in an upstairs bedroom. Detectives say the mother had been raped and sodomized.
Authorities say the suspect, 20-year-old Mwamaratunga Pipole, lives in the same apartment complex as the victims.
Both victims were treated at a local hospital, but investigators say they got the shock of their lives when they returned home to the apartments. Police said that Pipole was relaxing in a chair when the two pulled up.
"The mom and daughter were returning by taxi cab from the hospital. They observed the suspect sitting in a chair in front of an apartment. They then notified the police department," said Clarkston City Manager Keith Barker.
Pipole was questioned at Clarkston police headquarters and then transferred to DeKalb County Jail.
Pipole's mother told FOX 5 that she is from Burundi and does not speak English, but said through an interpreter that she will reserve judgment regarding her son until she gets more information. She said her son works at a chicken plant in Gainesville, has his green card and has been in the U.S. for about four years.
Clarkston police are checking with other agencies to see if this case is connected with any other sexual assaults and robberies around the metro area.
