GAINESVILLE, Ga. -

The man New York police say shot and killed a co-worker Friday in front of the Empire State Building was from north. Georgia.

Jeffrey Johnson, 58, graduated from Gainesville High School in 1971.

Current Superintendent of Schools Dr. Merrianne Dyer went to school with Johnson and remembered him being very talented.

"He graduated 1971, was there all four years and he was the assistant art editor for the school newspaper, using his talents there…some pep club and participated in intramural athletics," said Dyer.

Gainesville police told FOX 5 that NYPD contacted their department on Friday. They then notified Johnson's elderly parents who still live in Gainesville.

Johnson was laid off a year ago.  Police say he fatally shot his coworker, Steve Ercolino, who he had several workplace squabbles with.  The broad daylight shooting created chaos. Police responding to the scene killed Johnson.

Many people here in Gainesville say their heart goes out to his surviving sister and parents.
