ATLANTA -

The man who claims to have shot and killed a former Georgia State University soccer player in self defense faced a judge Saturday morning.

Emery Parrish, 30, was denied bond at his First Appearance at the Fulton County Jail. He turned himself into police on Friday after his lawyer negotiated his surrender.

Parrish is accused of murdering Ayokunle Lumpkin last Sunday morning. Police say Lumpkin was shot after Parrish struck another vehicle near a gathering of students in southeast Atlanta. Parrish claims he was attacked an was forced to defend himself.

Friends defended Lumpkin's actions and called him a hero during a vigil on Wednesday.

No word on Parrish's next court appearance.
