ATLANTA -

The man charged in the shooting death of a former Georgia State University soccer star turned himself in on Friday.

Police have charged Emery Parrish, 30, in the death of Ayokunle Lumpkin. Parrish says he acted in self-defense when he shot and killed Lumpkin early Sunday.

Parrish's vehicle had struck another vehicle near a gathering of students in southeast Atlanta. Friends of the victim said he tried to stop the driver from fleeing the scene.

"I did not mean for this to happen. I told them I had driver's license, I had insurance. They attacked me," said Parrish.

"He didn't deserve to be assaulted and he certainly didn't mean to shoot somebody, but they attacked him. He had no choice but to act in self-defense," said Parrish's attorney, Dennis Schieb.

Relatives of the 23-year-old shooting victim were not immediately available to comment after Parrish turned himself in.

"I want to I'm sorry to the family. My heart goes out to the family and I just didn't mean for this to happen," said Parrish.

Earlier this week, they said he died while trying to do the right thing.

Family members plan to hold a funeral service for Ayokunle next week in Marietta.

Parrish is a convicted felon with a previous record of drug charges, according to police.
