SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -
Sandy Springs police say a wrong-way driver was killed in a wreck on Ga. 400 early on Friday.
Steve Rose of the Sandy Springs Police Department says 22-year-old Carlyn Emily Royball of Alpharetta was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Ga. 400. The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. near Roberts Drive, and closed all southbound lanes for nearly three hours.
Authorities say two cars were involved, and both overturned. The car hit by the wrong-way driver was driven by Kelly Stevens, co-host of the popular radio morning show, The Vikki and Kelly Show on 98.5. Stevens suffered a broken leg and arm as a result of the collision. He was rushed to Grady Hospital.
Despite his injures, he was able to call his co-host, Vikki Locke, and described what happened.
"All of a sudden I looked up and there was headlights. It was a wrong-way driver. I was conscious but I mean, the whole thing happened so fast. Nothing I could do," said Stevens.
Locke said Stevens was more concerned about the woman who was killed than himself.
Stevens is lucky to be alive since he told authorities he was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Sandy Springs police
are working to determine what caused Royball to allegedly enter Ga. 400 in
the wrong lane.
The accident on Ga. 400 is the second in nearly 10 days that involved a wrong-way driver.
