Some illegal immigrants get license

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia's attorney general says illegal immigrants who are granted permission to stay in the country under an Obama administration policy announced in June will be eligible for driver's licenses in the state.

In a letter to the governor obtained by The Associated Press, Attorney General Sam Olens says illegal immigrants who can produce proof of "approved deferred action status" will be eligible for a driver's license.

The Obama administration policy allows certain illegal immigrants who were brought here at a young age to apply to stay in the country and get a work permit for two years.

Olens said illegal immigrants with this special status would not, however, be eligible for a state identification card. He says such cards are considered public benefits which are not available to illegal immigrants.
