KSU students headed to GOP convention

KENNESAW, Ga. -

Several Kennesaw State University students are headed to the Republican National Convention in Tampa to follow the Georgia delegations.

Twenty political science and communications majors are preparing for convention weeks. One group will head to Tampa next week. Another group is going to Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention, which begins on September 3.

The Tampa group brushed aside concerns that its trip could be affected by Tropical Storm Isaac.

"We're going to be inside most of the time, but just in case, we have an umbrella and maybe a pair of galoshes, so I think we should be good," said Weston Slaton.

The KSU students are enrolled in courses designed to gain real world experience in political research and journalism.

"It's a great learning opportunity and it's a great hands-on opportunity to learn about how conventions and parties work," said KSU professor Kerwin Swint.

The group plans on sending back reports to a class website.

"I'm really looking to learn more about what really goes on behind the scenes and I'm also looking to make lots of connections where I can meet many influential people at the convention," said Chase Duvall.

KSU's Tampa team leaves Sunday morning. The group said they would be prepared in the case of a storm.
