ATLANTA -
An attorney for a suspect says his client shot and killed GSU graduate Ayokunle Lumpkin in self-defense after hitting a car outside a party on Sunday.
Dennis Scheib says his client, Emery Parrish, is ready to turn himself now that Atlanta police have a warrant for him.
Through his attorney, the 30-year-old Parrish says it was raining Sunday night when he accidentally hit a parked Hummer on Milton Avenue. According to police, Lumpkin and several friends were at a party when they heard Parrish hit the vehicle.
His attorney says Parrish stopped and tried to get his insurance card and driver's license out. That's when, he claims, that Lumpkin and several others from the party started assaulting him.
Parrish says through his attorney he only fired in self-defense.
"He started pushing him, they ripped his shirt. They hit him in the head. I have a picture where they grabbed his arms, where someone grabbed him real hard and left black and blue marks on his arm. Guy kept coming, somebody else coming while he was sitting in the car and he fired," said Scheib.
Scheib says Parrish is extremely distraught about the shooting, and says his client ran because Parrish is a convicted felon and was scared. The attorney said that Parrish threw away the weapon used in the shooting.
Parrish will turn himself into authorities on Friday, according to Scheib.
In addition to murder, Shieb says Parrish will face two weapons charges.
