A local man is searching for family members of a World War II veteran that he believes lived in DeKalb County. Mark Whipkey found the veteran's dog tags buried underground.
Whipkey located the tags at the WD Thomson Park off Mason Mill Drive in DeKalb County.
"As soon as I took it out of the ground, I knew exactly what it was," said Whipkey.
The tags have the name of Frank Bell Jernigan.
Whipkey said that he has been unable to locate Jernigan or his family.
"I just kind of look at it as it's a part of him, it's history, historical," said Whipkey. "I would think his family, children, grandchildren would love to have a piece of their grandfather."
Whipkey said that he's found all sorts of treasures through the years, but this one is one of his favorites.
"I was in service over 11 years and from day one, I wore dog tags around my neck. Everywhere I went, I had dog togs. I lost my dog tags, my original set," said Whipkey. "I'd be kind at a loss for words if someone just gave me a call and said ‘I have your dog tags.'"
