Estate sales offer bargains, ways to make money

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

An estate sale is when someone's belongings are sold off for a variety of reasons, whether it's a death, foreclosure, or in many cases -- downsizing. But what you might not know is that shopping at an estate sale can turn into a way to make some money.

Beth Tyson is smart, prepared, and when Good Day met her she was stalking through a stranger's house.

"It's the hunt.  It's all about the hunt for me," said Tyson.

Armed with an arsenal of tiny tools to examine her possible purchases, she will not leave empty-handed.

"I was just walking around a few minutes ago and found some items out in the garage that were not on the website.  And I'm gonna make those mine," said Tyson.

Tyson is an estate sale shopper. She says the shopping can get very competitive.

"I have had some run-ins with some people before," said Tyson.

She starts her shopping trek online with dozens of estate sale listings, and companies like Old Mill Antiques even make it easy.

"We load a ton of photos because people are very visual," said Cindy Beamon of Old Mill Antiques.

So going to an estate sale, Tyson knows what she's looking for, and what it's worth.

"You should know about what the price should be on that item," Tyson said.

And if it checks out, she buys it.

"You can go get Hummels for a deal, Llardros, you can get furniture for a bargain. Makes no sense to buy brand-new things," said Derrick Kicklighter of Old Mill Antiques.

Tyson isn't just saving money, she's also making it. What she buys, she re-sells at her antique booths.
