Georgia militia suspect wanted to protect against federal attack

Posted: Updated:

One of the elderly defendants in the north Georgia militia terrorism case says he was only trying to protect Georgians from an attack by federal troops.

Fred Thomas is one of two north Georgia men who pled guilty to conspiracy to possess a destructive device.

The government and its chief informant told the FOX 5 I-Team that Thomas wanted a bomb like this to blow up federal buildings in Atlanta.

But in court papers, Thomas denied he wanted to assassinate anyone and only acquired the bomb and a silencer to be prepared if the federal government turned its weapons on the people of the United States.

Thomas and co-defendant Dan Roberts will be sentenced Wednesday morning in federal court in Gainesville.
