Georgia Tech cuts summer commencement

ATLANTA (AP) - The Georgia Institute of Technology is eliminating summer commencement ceremonies to save money.

The Atlanta university announced that it will hold two commencement ceremonies each year -- one in the fall and another in the spring -- instead of 3.

Georgia Tech spokesman Matt Nagel tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/NYghNE) that the change is being made to be fiscally responsible. He said the move will save from $35,000 to $70,000.

Nagel said about 450 students participate in summer commencement. That compares to about 1,500 for fall and 2,300 for spring.
