The pain at the pump is getting worse and it looks like there won't be any relief until after Labor Day.
According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gas today was $3.72 -- the highest price ever on this date, but not the highest price ever. The all-time high was $4.11 in July 2008.
Several gas stations in the metro Atlanta area sold gas for $3.99 a gallon on Monday.
The increased cost of gas means some drivers have been forced to cut back in other areas.
Marilyn Houston Coleman said she's had no choice but to cut back on the amount of groceries she buys each week.
"I've lost weight, it affects my grocery bill, my utilities. It affects everything in my life with this gas and you got to have it. You got to go to work," said Coleman.
AAA says gas prices have risen 12 percent since July 1.
Investors have been worried about disruption to oil supplies in the Middle East and North Sea.
In the U.S., there were problems with refineries and pipelines in the West Coast and Midwest, including a fire in California.
Seasonal factors are also at play: Summer blends of gas cost more and demand goes up as families go on vacation.
The good news is that the pace of the increases at the pump has slowed down considerably. The price rose 19 cents in the two weeks that ended last Wednesday. It's only gone up 1 cent in the five days since. But gas costs about 26 cents more than it did a month ago and 14 cents more than this time last year.
