Police are searching for the killer of a former Georgia State University soccer player on Monday.
The Fulton Medical Examiner's Office says that Ayokunle Lumpkin, 23, of Kennesaw, was shot in the 200 block of Milton Avenue in southeast Atlanta around 1:44 a.m. on Sunday. Atlanta police say Lumpkin was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital where he died.
Police say Lumpkin and some friends were at a house party on Martin Street early Sunday morning when a driver hit the victim's girlfriend's car. Lumpkin and others tried to chase down the driver, but somehow during the confrontation gunfire rang out.
Atlanta police say they have found the car Lumpkin and the others were looking for. Police say that witnesses gave them the vehicle description, license plate number and description of the shooter on Sunday.
Lumpkin is a Georgia State University graduate and played on the soccer team. Panther's soccer head coach Brett Surrency released the following statement on Sunday afternoon:
"Everyone in the Georgia State soccer family is devastated by this tragic loss. Our hearts go out to Ayokunle's family. He was a wonderful teammate and friend with a great personality and a bright future. He always had a smile on his face, and everyone enjoyed being around him. He will be greatly missed."
Friends and loved ones gathered Sunday evening for a candlelight vigil in Atlanta to remember Lumpkin. That vigil will be held Wednesday night at Sprayberry High School.
Lumpkin's uncle, Tunde Onadipe, said his nephew always extended a helping hand.
"He was doing what he does best of being who he is. Being helpful. And that's, that's the act that took his life," said Onadipe.
Police have not released details relating to the case, but they say they are following up on good leads.
