Macon working to live up to "age-friendly" tagline

MACON, Ga. -

Officials in Macon and surrounding Bibb County are getting to work to bolster their recent designation as an "age-friendly" community.

The Telegraph reports the AARP granted the city and county that distinction earlier this month as part of a program with the World Health Organization aimed at making communities more comfortable and accessible to the elderly.

The next step is devising a plan to makeover Macon's Tattnall Square Park to use as a template for age-friendly improvements to other neighborhoods.

Macon spokesman Chris Floore says an advisory committee is being formed as the first step in a five-year plan. The payoff for residents is that Macon and Bibb County will be able to use the "age-friendly" designation in their promotional materials.
