ATLANTA -
Emory University officials have admitted that they've lying about admissions data for more than a decade to ensure a top ranking in lists of the country's best colleges.
University officials said on Friday that its admissions office has been reporting false data to the groups that rank colleges. For decades, the university has consistently ranked as one of the top 20 in the country in publications such as the U.S. News and World Report.
Emory said their new dean of admissions noticed discrepancies and they brought a law firm to perform an independent investigation. They discovered that the school lied about SAT scores and class rank data for more than a decade.
Emory University President James Wagner said in a letter posted on the school's website: "The investigation found that there had been in fact intentional errors in reporting standardized test scores and class rank dating at least to 2000."
Emory says two former deans of admissions knew about that misreporting and no longer work at the school.
Other schools such as Claremont McKenna College in California have also been caught up in similar scandals.
School administration officials would not answer questions or talk on camera, but the president said in his letter quote: "I am deeply disappointed. Indeed, anyone who cares about Emory's reputation for excellence in all things must regret this news."
High school seniors Anna Sewall and Suzanna Tarkington, who currently making their college lists, said college rank is a big part of their decision and Emory lying about the numbers is a big deal.
"It kind of downgrades the outlook of what Emory what would be as a university," one of the high school seniors said.
Emory hasn't said exactly how big a difference the false data had on its rankings.
The newest U.S. News and World Report list will be released on September 12.
